SPOKEN WORD ~ PERFORMANCE POETRY

“This is something that the world
needed to hear
and I needed to write.”
Amanda Gorman ~

Ms. Gorman was the youngest poet in U.S. history to speak at a presidential inauguration, when she recited her poem “The Hill We Climb”.

Welcome to the ultimate artistic form of expression and discover the power of the voice! Spoken Word is a way of allowing your audience to hear and feel poetry in the most memorable and dramatic way.  Slam poetry, open mics, and dramatic monologues are often where Spoken Word Performance Poetry is delivered and enjoyed.  Our campers (ages 9-15) will learn how to create and express their poetry in a way that it is memorable, moving, and impactful!

Learn how to write, then deliver and perform poetry through projection, annunciation and rhythm.
Our poets will draw inspiration from their personal experiences, issues they are passionate about, to current events…then write and compose their own poems and have the opportunity to present them aloud as a performance piece before a live audience.

PAW’s Spoken Word Camp will teach your child how to express themselves through their written poetry while taking their passion to another level, working on their public speaking skills, language skills, presentation, aural awareness, poetic vocabulary, and identifying stanza and poem structures while also expanding on self-awareness and self-confidence. Along this journey they will learn about memorization, rhyming, storytelling, articulation, directness while engaging their audience and giving their own written word a voice!

PAW’s Spoken Word Camp takes children on a journey of self-discovery through the medium of poetry as performance. Within each one week session, students learn Language Arts skills including; diction, enunciation, and projection through a series of fun vocal exercise and breathing games. Campers will explore age-appropriate spoken word performances for inspiration and skill development, focusing on utilizing powerful literary elements including rhyme, alliteration, onomatopoeias, similes, metaphors, repetition, personification, hyperboles, symbolism, tone, and mood.

Our campers are provided a safe and supportive space where they will learn to use these literary skills to articulate their thoughts, feelings, perspectives, and experiences in a series of written poems.  From there, our campers will give life to their written words by participating in workshops to develop a performance style with intentional body language, meaningful tone and diction, as well as personal stylistic touches to enhance their performances.

Amanda Gorman Used Her Performance Poetry
to Correct Her Speech Disability!

Amanda Gorman, the young Spoken Word Artist who performed at the inauguration of President Joe Biden, was born with a learning delay that affected her speech and pronunciation. In 2017, she was named the first-ever National Youth Poet Laureate of the United States.

In an interview with Oprah Winfrey, she explains how she used reciting her poetry to work through her challenges, “I’m really grateful for that experience because it informs my poetry,” she tells Winfrey. “I think it made me all that much stronger of a writer when you have to teach yourself how to say words from scratch. When you are learning through poetry how to speak English, it lends to a great understanding of sound, of pitch, of pronunciation, so I think of my speech impediment not as a weakness or a disability, but as one of my greatest strengths.”

“What inspires me about rap is that it's written in a poetic way.” Billie Eilish

"Spoken word poetry is the art of performance poetry...it involves creating poetry
that doesn't just want to sit on paper...something about it
demands it be heard out loud or witnessed in person."
~Poet, Sarah Kay
