CORONAVIRUS UPDATE

May 9th, 2020

Dear Parents, Campers and Our PAW Community,

On behalf of everyone here at Performing Arts Workshops, I hope this message finds you and your loved ones safe and well during these challenging times.   I have heard from many parents who like me, are alarmed at the prospect of running an in-person camp as usual.  But all of us at PAW are committed to delivering your family our mission of ensuring that all school-aged children are provided the opportunity to experience the life affirming benefits of an arts education.  To that end, we are thrilled to follow the lead of Public and Private Schools and Universities across the nation and LAUNCH PAW’s Camp for the Summer of 2020 Live Online!

We know how important it is to you that your children are engaged in fun, enriching activities over the course of the summer, especially now that they are coping with new social distancing norms. We also know that it is every parent’s first priority as well as our own that we are keeping our campers, families, staff, and communities safe. With PAW’s Live Online Summer Camp Workshops, we accomplish both of these goals through our traditional curriculum of acting technique, singing, dance, guitar, comedy, magic, and debate utilizing Zoom, an online video meeting interface trusted by schools and universities throughout the country.

We are now accepting enrollments for our 8 one week sessions beginning June 15th through August 7th.  Many of your favorite PAW teachers will be here with us via Zoom teaching curriculum from eight of our students’ all-time favorite musicals. Each session is Monday thru Friday and you can choose from our “Partial Day” of one workshop per day, “Half Day” of two workshops per day or even our “Full Day” with three workshops per day. PAW has created a schedule where kids will log on and off providing time for snacks, rest periods, lunch and restroom breaks.  We are including group Chit-Chat sessions and End Of Day Hurray’s which will inspire each child, leaving them feeling happier and more connected every day that they participate. Some of the emails we have received express the financial hardships many of you are enduring. So, it is our pleasure to provide a FREE Week of our Live Online Summer Camp to every family who had registered & paid for camp before the shut down on March 13th, and a FREE Day Pass to all past PAW families who have not yet registered for camp. One more thing we are doing to be of service, all families who register for camp will receive a single tuition when siblings take the online camp together on one device, sharing workshops.

On our “Live Online Summer Camp” webpage you will find all the camp details including: session dates, curriculum, workshop schedule, tuition, and see photos & bios of the amazing PAW staff who have signed on to teach this summer. We will get through this together, helping each other.   We are still in the early days of understanding COVID-19.  To slow the spread of COVID-19, governors in 46 states have closed more than 124,000 U.S. public and private schools, affecting more than 55 million school students. Most of the school districts here in California are not scheduled to re-open until the Fall Term begins.

Opening schools and summer camps will require government and district leaders to develop the new strategies needed to navigate these uncharted waters. There is little clarity about the conditions and factors that should trigger the reopening of schools or if summer camps will be allowed to open at all. On May 8th and confirmed again on May 9th, Governor Andrew Cuomo of New York reported that the original perception that COVID-19 did NOT affect children was incorrect. There is evidence that it can cause severe illness with symptoms similar to Kawasaki disease and toxic shock-like syndromes, with recent deaths reported and others being investigated. This has been corroborated by Dr. Anthony Fauci of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), Dr. Robert Redfield of the United States Centers For Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as well as the heads of other reporting agencies.  The CDC website states that federal health officials are currently working on additional guidance to help schools determine when and how to re-open in an orderly manner.

Just a Note: Like all schools, PAW was required to close our office and cancel our current class schedule to protect the health and welfare of our students and their families.  And, our office will remain closed through the duration of the Safer At Home order for LA County and the Shelter In Place order for California.  In preparation to open our office as quickly and safely as possible, so that we may begin the process of reaching out to each parent who has called and written to us, we have asked our staff to stagger their hours, shorten their days and come in as often as their family schedule allows.  This is with the primary goal of making us available to you while still ensuring the safety of our PAW office team. Thank you so much for continuing to be part of our PAW family. The way we spend time with friends and family, birthday celebrations, and holidays have become virtual…and so will PAW!  I am looking forward to seeing your incredible children back at camp when it is safe to do so. Until then, see you on Zoom!

Wishing you health and wellness,

March 18th, 2020

Dear PAW Family,

Here at Performing Arts Workshops, our hearts go out to every family affected by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.  As a summer camp and after-school enrichment program, the safety and well-being of our students and families is our top priority during these challenging times. Each one of you make up our wonderful, unified PAW family and we could not run an award-winning summer camp without you. We are actively working in good faith to continue to ensure that we are providing the best accommodations and adjustments possible during these uncertain times. While we understand that your summer plans are now unclear, we want to safeguard your trust in us as a program that provides you with your summer camp services. With so much happening around us that is beyond our control and with limited options available, we have outlined two possible scenarios regarding our Summer Camp 2020 season, which you can find below. We are continuing to monitor the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and will keep this page updated. IN THE EVENT WE ARE NOT PERMITTED OR ABLE TO RUN IN-PERSON SUMMER CAMP 2020:

  • All tuition can be transferred to PAW’s Summer Camp 2021, 2022 or 2023 season in full.
  • We are doubling all credits on file with “camp value”. If you paid for one session, we will offer an additional session free of charge.
  • All currently enrolled families will have first choice of PAW’s Summer Camp 2021, 2022 & 2023 selections.
  • Tuition credits can be transferable to siblings and friends.
  • For the next 3 years, PAW will freeze all pricing for currently enrolled students to ensure a smooth transfer of credits and sessions due.
  • All camp age ranges will be increased by one year to ensure that all children currently enrolled can still participate in summer camp 2021.
  • PAW has been working in good faith to prepare and plan for the upcoming summer by booking camp spaces, onboarding teachers, writing & creating curriculum, purchasing materials, and performing the months of administrative work and outreach needed to launch and run camp.  Although we are unable to offer any cash/debit/credit card refunds, like most small businesses diligently working through this unprecedented time and crisis, through our natural disaster tuition credit protocol, we have outlined above how we will honor and make good on all prepaid camp tuition.

IN THE EVENT THAT WE ARE PERMITTED AND ABLE TO RUN IN-PERSON  SUMMER CAMP 2020:

  • If the full summer is available to us, all tuition will be used for the sessions that your child is already signed up for OR you can opt to transfer your tuition to PAW’s Summer Camp 2021 season.
  • If some sessions are forced to be cancelled, that tuition can be transferred to any Summer Camp 2020 session or PAW Camp location of your choosing, OR you can opt to transfer your tuition to PAW’s Summer Camp 2021 season.
  • For the safety of our campers, their parents and grandparents, all children will be checked into and out of camp at the door each day. Parents will not be permitted to enter the facility.
  • For the safety of our campers, their parents and grandparents, all 2020 camp performances will be recorded at camp and each family will be provided a link to view the performance video online. This show format will minimize contact and protect the health and well-being of our PAW Family members.
